The artist is deeply fascinated by the human condition, encompassing the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects. Her exploration often delves into the notions of 'self' and a sense of cultural belonging, navigating both the context of the Asian diaspora within the globalizing living environment and the intricacies of self-identity derived from multifaceted experiences in her hometown, Yunnan, China, which including a journey that extends to the assimilation into a new culture in North America.
Through the method of collaging and layering using oil and ink, the artist intricately combines human body parts, Buddha figurines, elements of flora and fauna, and traditional Chinese calligraphic brush strokes. The resulting embodiment creates an aesthetic visualization that roots itself in the profound sense of cultural belonging at a personal level, transcending the confines of its immediate surroundings.
The three works specifically explore the notions of self and cultural belonging in a feminine manner. The evasive red eyes can be interpreted as a conduit for communication, intricately linking the artist's complex psychological emotions in portraying feminine sexuality. Iconic shapes such as Bamboo, Buddha figurines, Sakura flower petals, Chinese Calligraphy, among others, play pivotal roles in evoking the spaces where the artist gathers her cultural heritage and absorbs diverse influences.
The nuanced interplay between the layers of rice paper and the transparencies of oil paints serves as a reflection of the artist's physical and psychological positioning, existing within the realm of permanent re-contextualization.
